…and this is how we will end. With you and me bent.
So, according to their Wikipedia entry it seems that Matchbox Twenty are no longer in “hiatus” and are now classed as broken up. Which sucks muchly as I was hoping they’d eventually get back together after working on solo projects and such like. I guess you could say that they were one of my favourite bands of all time. From the first song that I got recommended, Last Beautiful Girl by Jess, right through to their last album I’ve loved pretty much all that I’ve heard from them. They also seem like cool guys that don’t take themselves too seriously. So, my five videos this week are going to be my favourite five Matchbox Twenty videos. *sob*
Unwell (Video)
I’m not crazy I’m just a little impaired
I know right now you don’t care
But soon enough you’re gonna think of me
And how I used to be
Firstly, I just want to say, I want the t-shirt that Rob is wearing in this video. It would go so well with my Cheap as Chips tee. The song is pretty much describing the depression overcoming you after a break up of someone that you really love. He’s not actually got a mental illness, but it sure feels like. I know that feeling and don’t we all talk to ourselves in public?
Downfall (Video
Now I’m back, on my own
Yeah my feet are heavy, made of stone
I’ll make you go where I go
Well they’re here, can I take you home
I personally think the best track off the album “More Than You Think You Are” this song is about a guy who knows he’ll be terrible for the girl, but wants her anyway. Be my saviour, I’ll be your downfall. On the album this is sung with a gospel choir in the background, which sounds absolutely fantastic. However, the video is of one of their live performances in which Kyle shows off with a guitar solo at the end. I also think it works having the parts without the choir in, it just sort of “breaks down” which sounds nice. Rockin’ stuff, I just wish I’d been able to see them live.
Push (Video)
And I don’t know why you couldn’t just stay with me,
you couldn’t stand to be near me when my face don’t seem to want to shine
’cause it’s a little bit dirty.
Possibly their most successful song, or was that 3am? Everybody thought this was about domestic violence and how Rob wants to beat up his wife. When he spoke about it, it was actually written from the woman’s perspective and from experiences he’d had at being abused, mentally, by an ex. It’s beautiful anyways. Plus he looks cute in the vid…
Real World (Video)
Straight up, what did you hope to learn about here
If I were someone else, would this all fall apart
Strange, where were you, when we started this gig,
I wish the real world, would just stop hassling me
What would it be like to be someone else? I dunno, but I’d like to be the rainmaker, I’d store it in boxes with little tags on every one
Wouldn’t we all like the real world to just stop bugging us? I would. The video is, very, random. But it’s where I got the infamous camel from.
Bright Lights (Video
She got out of town
On a railway New York bound
Took all except my name
Another alien on Broadway
And saving the best till last. I love this song, so much. From the quiet, slow piano at the beginning with Rob’s voice straining “maybe, maybe, maybe” to the the bad ass “let that city…” that’s screamed out at the end. Fantastic, and the live version is great with Kyle jumping up on the (must be reinforced?!) piano to belt out his guitar bit at the end while the other members really beat their instruments up. So energetic. And don’t I wish she’d fuck it all off and turn around?! Heck yes.
I’m so depressed and yet happy at the same time! Woo-yay!
£13k, yay!
Boss

For me, it has to be the collaboration with Carlos Santana. Plus, trivial but has to be said - I truly do *hate* the earrings…
It’s an okay song, but not my kind of thing. More mexico than rock. And I agree, I hate the earrings, but everyone has faults :p
