If this geek ruled the world..

earbuds..you think I’d ever get a girl? Get myself a life? Move outta my brother’s basement?

Firstly, apologies, I’ve been too lazy to write anything in a few weeks. Even my last post was a bit of a cop out and I feel this one wont be a huge improvement on that. So, another bullet point filled update.

* TV I’ve been into lately… I’m sure I’ve probably recommended half of these to all the people that I’ve spoken too lately because they are pretty much all I’ve been downloading on a weekly basis. Chuck. Fantastic show, bound to be cancelled. Big Bang Theory. Cheesy show, but good to just watch and not worry about much and just laugh at all the geek references but I think it’s only me that gets the damn references, plus how can you not love a show where the Barenaked Ladies have done the theme song?! IT Crowd. Second series was a bit of a let down after the amazing first episode (Roy as a crip and Moss as a barman, fantastic) which is a shame because it’s a good laugh but I think it’d be better if they actually fleshed some of the storylines out and WHAT was that whole episode with the smokers thinking they are in the USSR about. A good joke, but 20 mins long?! Also, rewatching Lost and listening to the Podcast in preparation for Series 4… A good recap of S3 would be to watch Iain Lee (how amazing is that man!?) and his countdown of the top 10 moments which you can watch here. Now, of course, if you’re a Miro user you can just add it through the channel guide and you get all the new eps downloaded and ready to listen to as and when. I’ve also rewatched some of Jericho in preparation for the mid season 7 episode arc which will finish off the story (apparently there is no chance of a s3 now, according to rumours.)

* Geeky music. In a combination of a Friday Five and a catch-up-with-Brett’s-life post here’s some of the fantastic music from the excellent Geoff Smith. Musician and Podcast jingle man extreme, Geoff, has put a few songs up on his website that I think rock.

Geoff Smith - Digg The Code (Video)
I wanna be just like you,
I wanna be digging the truth,
Tear down the walls, it’s something new,
I’m digging you!

Unless you were living under a rock you will of heard about the HD-DVD code controversy that happened a few months back and the part that digg played in it. Here is a video from Geekbrief.tv that features the cute, but usually annoying, Calli Lewis and everyone’s favourite Diggnation hosts Kevin Rose & Alex Albrecht.

Geoff Smith - If This Geek Ruled the World
I’d get my own domain,
One that didn’t contain my name
And I’d point my DNS at where I am

Possibly the only song to mention DNS in it’s lyrics? Along with name checks for Second Life, MySpace, WoW, Digg, PHP and YouTube. It’s actually made it’s way onto one of the CDs for my car as it’s really catchy and you just find yourself singing along ;) Or maybe that’s just me?

Geoff Smith - Not On The Radio
Does anyone round here still have a radio?
Anyone here at all?
Baby, I’m just bitter, wont you save me from that hell?

And to segway between the above and the below. A song more about music than specifically tech. It’s almost sort of Divine Comedy or Belle & Sebastian sound. Upbeat, like it.

And then, the other week, I bought a CD.. Right, pick yourself off the floor. It was from HMV whilst shopping and it was cheap and looked interesting and I don’t mind shelling out a fiver for a double CD. That’s about the right price point I think for me. So, there is a few tracks from that I’m going to share…

Arctic Monkeys - Love Machine (Video)
We’re gift-wrapped kitty cats,
We only turn into tigers when we gotta fight back
Let’s go, Eskimo
Out into the blue…

I like the Girls Aloud version of this song, it’s one of them guilty pleasure things. I also love this version. I especially like the part where he laughs later on in the song. Good stuffs.

Sugababes - Living for the Weekend (Video)
Working all the time
Work is such a bind
Got some money to spend
Living for the weekend

Sugababes, the chav’s ultimate band, covers the song that makes me think of the ultimate chav. Best bit is where “one of them” forgets the lyrics.

* Visited Crishna this past weekend. Managed to not fix her laptop. Got hooked on Eureka. Went shopping at Morrisons & Waitrose. Used GPS to get back to Victoria Coach Station as Crishna is notoriously bad on that route. Got there in time. Coach on the way there and way back was ramming.

* Just bought myself a portable 320GB hard drive and new mouse. I was really short on space. I’m approaching nearly 1TB of capacity now. Eep! And to think my first hard drive was 20MB. And before that it was the joy of trying to fit 720K onto a floppy and before that… well, tapes FTW!

* Had a meeting with the HR advisor at work yesterday whilst he was visiting so now have a “plan of action.” Boss has applied for another job. I feel things will be changing very soon. Eek!

* Can’t believe I just missed the TRS guys in London. Bugger. The London show looked like they had such a blast and the whole ep was pretty much a continuous laugh.

* Have had a nice few days with TT the past few days, so that’s good.

I am sure there is other stuff but I can’t remember.

So, until next time keep your madeira cake laced with lemon, sliced and served with tea.

wont you take me back?
B
